Information Day on the 5th Framework Programme
and
Special General Assembly of AAATE.

Dear AAATE Member,
You are hereby invited to attend the following event, which will take place at the Zaventem
room, Holiday Inn Hotel, Brussels Airport, on 24 March 1999, between 10.00 and 16.30.
1. Information Day on the European Union 5th Framework Programme focusing on
research and development related to assistive and disabled and elderly people. The first
call for proposals will be launched on 16 March with a deadline of 16 June. At this
Information Day, representatives of the European Commission will give information about the
Programme and the Call. This is an arrangement for members of AAATE only and there will be
no cost for the programme itself, only for food and drinks.
2. Special General Assembly of AAATE. According to the AAATE Constitution, the
Board can call a special General Assembly if it considers so needed. The AAATE Board now
calls the members to a special General Assembly at the Zaventem room, Holiday Inn Hotel,
Brussels Airport, 24 March 1999, at 15.30. There is just one agenda item:
AAATE reaction to the changing of head of unit for Disabled and Elderly in the European
Commission, DG XIII.
Egidio Ballabio will now be leaving the field of Assistive Technology and go on to other
task in the European Commission. He was the orginator and initiator of the TIDE programme
and he led the programme and its continuation for nine years.
Because of his work, the field of assistive technology in Europe has been established and
developed in a way that would not have happened otherwise.
According to the AAATE Constitution, the General Assembly can appoint Honorary Members of
AAATE. The board propose that the special General Assembly appoint Egidio Ballabio Honorary
Member. This would be the first such appointment. The Board feels that it should be done
now, in good time before the next AAATE Conference. At the same time, the AAATE approach
to the new management can be discussed and decided upon.
Remember that you can vote by proxy by sending a note along with another member who will
attend the General Assembly. If you have questions, please contact somebody on the
Board.
A free shuttle bus is available between Brussels Airport and the Holiday Inn Hotel.
